Configuring the Graphical Login

It is possible to customise the graphical login screen somewhat ? I'd like to remove some of the graphical icons displayed (before entering username/password) for users, for a start. I installed qmail and several 'daemon' users, and now these have been added to the graphical login, which is confusing for the enduser. I'd appreciate some pointers for further information.
