No, it is only turned off to save some time during installation. SuSEconfig.fonts will always run at the end of the installation. Generating the Fontmap file takes a few more seconds and probably only very few people need that Fontmap file. Generating the Fontmap file works fine for me. Can you give me more detailed information about the error occuring on your system?
