I have a small (big) problem with a firewall. When I am able to connect to the computers on the inside from computers that are connected to the Internet and not to the local network I get that output from tcpdump: 08:54:10.737324 dial5.hws.edu.1028 > godel.hws.edu.telnet: R 2405807:2405807(0) win 0 (DF) 08:54:16.927324 dial5.hws.edu.1030 > godel.hws.edu.telnet: S 2473345:2473345(0) win 8192 <mss 1460> (DF) ..... If it does not work I get this output: 10:41:27.830000 dial5.hws.edu.1026 > godel.hws.edu.telnet: S 2625827:2625827(0) win 8192 <mss 1460> (DF) 10:41:30.970000 dial5.hws.edu.1026 > godel.hws.edu.telnet: S 2625827:2625827(0) win 8192 <mss 1460> (DF) 10:41:37.560000 dial5.hws.edu.1026 > godel.hws.edu.telnet: S 2625827:2625827(0) win 8192 <mss 1460> (DF) 10:41:50.550000 dial5.hws.edu.1026 > godel.hws.edu.telnet: S 2625827:2625827(0) win 8192 <mss 1460> (DF) The first packet that I get when it is working is missing. Am I right with the assumption that this is the syn packet? Sorry if it is off-topic but I don't know what the output of tcpdump means. I read the man pages but I could now find the information what the first packet is that is missing. Thanx for any help.
