Vendor string is stored in the database. You are right, the repository name can't, it changes, but there must be a way to calculate it: zypper does, somehow.
Think of a 'relational database'. One table being in the RPM database, one table being somewhere in /etc/zypp/repos.d/ The 'join' that zypper makes is based on the content. I'm not sure how, not sure of the specifics, but I'm sure that someone with enough knowledge of C or C+ could "use the Source, Luke", and tell us. Knowing the what I'm sure it cold be reconstructed in Perl, Python or Ruby.
