I had the same problem when I upgraded a few weeks ago and, after investigating, found that SuSE had changed permissions to add a little security to the X-window system. Any ID that you want to be able to run X windows has to be added to a group called "xok" so users can access the /usr/X11R6/bin directory. Try that. I added the users to the xok group but still get the same error message. also see this one you should be using Xwrapper to start the server or xdm.
