Thanks for your response, Mark, With the help of Sven, Tom, and Joachim I finally got onto the trail of the cause. Regardless of what my 50-synaptics.conf had in it, the tapping would not work. None of the 3 apps for configuring it would help. Finally, I looked at the Live CD which worked and discovered that the app used by default was synaptiKs. In 2 1/2 days of digging I never once found anything referencing that particular app except on their website!
Anyway, the solution was to remove ANY and ALL synaptic configuration apps along with the libsynaptics file, rebooting to make sure all were gone, then install synaptiks ONLY. Restarting got me back to the beginning and the synaptiks app ran fine and did it's job. Obviously there is some conflict going on between the various synaptics apps.
Thanks again to all who responded.
Richard
