Major and minor, you can find in the detailed list of devices, given in the output of "ls -l /dev", and they identify devices. What module driver is assigned to them. You can find those numbers documented in the kernel sources documentation, /usr/src/linux/Documentation/ (path given from memory, so probably misspelled).
