printing problems

I have a hp 612c deskjet printer. running suse 7.2 an it detects the printer as an hp 610 - 612. i setup an can print a test page. then after it saves the configuration it just starts spiting out pages. has anyone else used this printer an had this problem an what did you do to solve it. I'm going to try a generic driver for it but would like to use the hp one to get color.
