Fact is than in more than 10 years of server use, I had only *one* disk failure (last summer) and I have no real "instant recovery" needs, so recovering from a backup is possible.
When you have no high-availability requirements, RAID is certainly overkill, yes. As for disks dying - - they WILL die. In my experience, the newer drives die faster than older. - on our external rented servers (21), all with RAID1 mirrors, after the first 5-6 years, I have a fairly steady rate of 2 dead drives per annum. - on our in-house storage servers (10x24 drives), we have about one dead drive per month. - disks tend to die at the most inopportune moments - like when everyone's out of reach. Always use hot standby drives. Of course, this is with an enterprise-style 24/7 duty cycle. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (-0.2°C) http://www.cloudsuisse.com/ - your owncloud, hosted in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
