I used Linux some years ago and hardware like printers and scanners needed a weekend's work to get anything like what you got with an hour or so with windows and the cd they gave you. HP still give you a cd but it has no linux content. There seems to have been little progress with installation and even though I'm reasonably literate, I can't get anywhere near the quality I see from my 'phone using a simple download-and-print-app. The app takes about a minute to install, it detects the printer and that's it. I can only conclude that everyone here is a Linux expert!
It has been said that Linux makes you pay with time and work instead of money. Just once, though. However, I don't understand your difficulties with YaST and cups. I find them very easier, much easier than the Windows procedures. And HP printers just work — maybe there are exceptions.
