thinking clearly.
Is it set to trying to boot from floppy at all? not the CD drive perhaps?
just talking through my hat here...

No still on the floppy. The floppy starts to boot and gives me a screen with a bunch of choices: harddisk, linux, noacpi, failsafe, rescue, and memtest. The memtest works fine every thing else fails with the same error mesg: Boot failed: please change disk and press a key to contine. After making a choice form the list above the floppy light is lit for several seconds before the error message comes up. It almost boots before failing. I think the idea is that the first disk boots a small linux kernel and one of the other 7 boot disks has the right usb drivers for my cdrom. Once the first disk boots it tries different disks until it can find the cdrom drive -- I am just guessing, but I think that is how it should work. Rafe
