Well, that's good! (You had said that pilot-link and jpilot were suffering the same problem - glad to hear that they got fixed, because it's much easier to sort software than hardware/driver issues!)

They both were, but kpilot installed an extra file that caused the kernel USB subsystem to kack: kpilotDaemon.
