well i had an issue with dns resolving earlier conecting to my pop3 and at
one point
postfix told me it could not resolve earthlink.net
so i was tryng to trouble shoot my problem

Looks like they are rejecting ICMP on their firewall. Many companies do this for security reasons.
http://earthlink.net is accessible via HTTP, so that proves they are up!
Is there any reason you must ping earthlink.net? Are you just using it for testing purposes?

Either they are down or they have setup their firewall to reject or drop ping request.
