The latest diald can also use the ethertap device to simulate an up and running NIC. To use this compile this with some other module a happen to forget and make the tap0 .. tap15 entries in /dev . See the documentation with the kernel and with diald. I believe there is a script with the doc's of diald which makes creating these entries easy.
