yep, true... you can send a program to a specific desktop but in this particular case about YaST that Carlos has pointed out (it also happens to me with Skype, for example) the application takes the focus, no matter on which desktop you are working on...
Absolutely. OOo does the same. I have some files that take a minute or so to open, so I try to open on their own workspace and continue working on another... useless. OOo grabs the focus away and I find myself trying to type into a not fully loaded instance. Too bad manners :-/
I also run different programs in different desktops but, by now, I only know how to send them to a desktop, not how to force them. I'll take a closer look at the "window-specific settings" you mention when I'm back at home...
I think kde has some such adjustements; gnome can have them, I think, using a different window manager. By default it uses metacity, but I have been unable to switch to a different one like windomaker or enlightment: cer@nimrodel:~> killall metacity && windowmaker & [2] 797 cer@nimrodel:~> wmaker fatal error: it seems that there is already a window manager running [2]+ Done killall metacity && windowmaker cer@nimrodel:~> metacity respawns so fast that windowmaker doesn't get a chance :-( In order to change it, I have had to rename the metacity binary! nimrodel:~ # mv /opt/gnome/bin/metacity /opt/gnome/bin/metacity.no And yes, windowmaker does have an option to "do not let it take focus" (and it works). Unfortunately, it doesn't integrate perfectly: I get a bunch of windomaker icons, most of which do not work (the configuration icon, for instance). So... I have to return to metacity: nimrodel:~ # mv /opt/gnome/bin/metacity.no /opt/gnome/bin/metacity cer@nimrodel:~> killall wmaker && metacity & - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
