Dear Marcia,
You should consider getting a SMC Barracade Broadband router/firewall. It takes the initial connection to your broadband device and acts as a router/switch to any ethernet PCs connected to it. The Barracade handles whatever is needed to logon and authenticate yourself to the ISP, acts as a good H/W firewall, and is just like a switch/hub for all PCs connected downstream from it. You talk to/control it via your browser, thru a webpage it 'hosts' in its 'guts'. I started out in DSL just like you, but since getting the SMC Barracade I would hate to go back.
Let us know what you do ............PeterB p.s. there are several bands that work just as well
Dear Peter, Thanks for this advice. I looked into the SMC Barricade a little bit last night and I am getting very interested in purchasing one. Since I will be adding another computer(my husband's) to my network I will need at least a hub, but this sounds like a better way to go. What model do you have? There are several models on the page I was looking at and I would love to know what would be the best for my needs. I have not found their actual official website yet. Do you have the url of the SMC Barricade company? There was alot of mention about needing firmware upgrades. Do you know what that is about? Thanks for the suggestion. Sincerely, Marcia

Dear All,
I am an extreme newbie about networking, however, I think I may be getting somewhere.
The major problem I have left at this time is that I cannot use the internet at the same time on my 2 networked computers. I have Suse8 pro on my Linux desktop and it is my server using Samba and Shorewall. I access the internet through a cable modem. My laptop is connected through the second nic on my desktop with a crossover cable and I am using Windows 2000 on my laptop. I have Linux (Suse8)on the laptop , also, and wanted to originally use it but could not get my ethernet recognized for some reason. I can see and open my Linux files on my Windows 2000 and using LinNeighborhood I can see and open my Windows 2000 files on my Linux Desktop. I am thrilled about that. I used Swat and Samba through Webmin to set this up.
Now, I am attempting to do internet sharing using Shorewall. I have succeeded somewhat because I can now use the internet on my laptop when I start the Shorewall firewall, but then I cannot use the internet on my desktop. When I stop the firewall then I no longer can use the internet on the laptop but I can use it on my Desktop. Of course, I want to be able to use the internet on both at the same time when shorewall is running. I know this is a simple configuration problem with shorewall and I have been studying and experimenting but still no luck. Could anyone help me with this problem?
Any help and/or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Marcia
