need some help from mouse experts

After my PS2 mouse was the cause of a system break down I have installed an old serial trackball. The trackball works (only as Microsoft compatible serial mouse) on my first serial port. What I would like to get to work though is to have all three buttons to work. Right now only the right and left button work. The middle is not reacting to anything. Some mouse experts around?
