ALWAYS do a fresh install after you have done a complete backup. I have seen so many horror stories unfold on this list and with my friends who decided to do upgrades and not fresh installs. Granted it was from SuSE 8 -> 9 and not SLES but I would think the logic holds. In the past, my experience is that SuSE upgrades are generally good, but I also agree with Hylton and I recommend this for every OS, . I also set up my file systems so that the stuff that crosses releases remains on a separate file system, such as /home, /usr/local. This depends on your specific installation.
