I have run SO on linux and OS/2 and while I like the feature set, I dont particularly care for the behavior of the program at stealing resources and keeping them after it closes. Applix while it does not have the "flash" seems somewhat kinder to resources. I saw that a third fixpack is out for SO 4 but its quite large (for me). I am hoping, after reading the applixware list, that applix sees that providing more enhanced filters and other featuresets will provide a more productive work area. SO 4 is nice but it suffers from that thing I want away from -- windowitis. I dont want a office suite with win95 looks. If I want a office suite that looks like win95, I run the Office Pro97 suite. What I would like is:
Resource issues are supposed addressed in verion 5 due at the end of Aug. or 1st of Sept. Yes....Applix is nice, but it simply lacks too many features. We may or may not like the Windoze look, which will get even more so in SO 5, however, it IS a smart move on SO's part as more and more people switch to Linux. I'm not as concerned about how it "looks" as how efficent the code is, bugs are removed, and features it has.
*modern features like import/export of modern wp/graphics/spreadsheets *good graphics handling abilities *integration at the file and workspace levels to include a unique multiple document interface. I have some ideas about what I would like to see in this area but its hard to write them down. *Nice hard disk footprint. Applix now is somewhat beefy while SO is less. Admittedly I do use the clipart and a few other features *better gui html editor. I can use a variety of tools but sometimes like to play with a gui editor.
Agree with the above!
ImO the SO4 suite suffers from trying to be too many things at one time.
No, not really.....it just needs to do it BETTER.
Perhaps the shared codebase or the shared development brings this liability.
No......it's that for the sake of compatibility it loads a BUNCH of libs into RAM, which is a BIG mistake!!!!!! This is supposed to be fixed with version 5, which is all new code. Fred -- Fred A.
