I haven't noticed this on my test machines. +1, the font rendering on kde4 is hands down the best I have ever seen. kde3, Vista, XP included. You may need to insure you have subpixel enabled. That makes a significant difference in rendering.

IMHO Ubuntu 9.04-Gnome, has definitely a better font rendering than Opensuse (11.1 and 11.2); we should investigate how Ubuntu is configuring fonts, in order to try reproducing the same goodness onto Opensuse.
