A point: you will need to drop the gamma for the monitor (Personal Settings>Display>Gamma) from the 1.0 down to whatever level you feel comfortable with -- I went down to 0.70 gamma -- because the screen is *too* bright :-( . Also, select sRGB colour rather than the default 6500K to get "proper" colours. Finally, use the digital connection to get better picture but bear in mind that with digital connection you lose 2 monitor controls because they are not needed (read the User Manual on disc).
I don't suggest changing gamma. All monitors have a gamma of 2.3, and all graphics systems (including web sites) rely on that. If you change the gamma value, stuff typically looks horribly broken.
BTW - most times monitors say that gamma is 1.0 if in fact it is 2.3 8-/
My viewsonic http://www.viewsonic.com/products/desktopdisplays/lcddisplays/graphicseries/... is grossly overbright and over contrasty without dropping those settings to less than 20%. I'm not the only one of this opinion http://www.newegg.com/Product/CustratingReview.asp?item=N82E16824116008 so I can understand the OP's complaint. -- "Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven."
