I will give this a try, too: FYI, you're not the only one with such issues. I have one system (out of four at our institute) that shows the same weird behavior, coming up with a lower mode. As it is only booted once in a while I stopped hunting for the cause after several fruitless tries, before it drives me completely nuts....
