I am running a three year old P166 Sony VAIO. I made the same decision that you did and jacked the RAM to 64MB and added a Western Digital 6.4 GB HD. It gave me three new 2GB partitions and is much faster than my older HDs. I also upgraded to an EXTERNAL 56Kb Zoom V90 Modem. The extra RAM and Additional HD made a new machine out of my old one. I expect the 2.2.x kernel to give me 2 to 5 times more speed than I have now with the 2.0.36 kernel.
Really? The improvements in 2.2.x are that great? How so, and in what respects? You seem to be saying that you expect this improvement in addition to whatever speed-up you've obtained from the h/w upgrades.
