These channels are probably muted by default. Most notably, HDMI output is muted. Start Konsole, and type "alsamixer". Select the soundcard with [F6] and use right-arrow to select channels, even past the right edge of the screen (keep pressing right-arrow). HDMI output is called SPDIF1 in my case. Also could be called IEC958... [M] to unmute It helps a lot to have KDE Multimedia control open and keep testing sound.
