I'm wanting to test some webpages before I put them up on the web but can not get apachie setup right so that the pages will show up on my box at home. I get the 404 error that the page is not found on this server an its there. I have gone in an chmod o+x /home/jack an also chmod o+r /home/jack/public_html/*.html so that they are searchable. Is there something else that needs to be done to make webpages setup an viewible on my box. thanks
You probably have to go thru /etc/httpd/http.conf and enable the public_html section. It should look something like the following. Also remember to include the ~, as in http://localhost/~jack. If that fails, post the error message from /var/log/httpd/ <p>Part of http.conf: # # UserDir: The name of the directory which is appended onto a user's home # directory if a ~user request is received. # <IfModule mod_userdir.c> UserDir public_html </IfModule> # # Control access to UserDir directories. The following is an example # for a site where these directories are restricted to read-only. # <Directory /home/*/public_html> AllowOverride FileInfo AuthConfig Limit # Options MultiViews Indexes SymLinksIfOwnerMatch IncludesNoExec Options MultiViews Indexes SymLinksIfOwnerMatch <Limit GET POST OPTIONS PROPFIND> Order allow, deny Allow from all </Limit> <LimitExcept GET POST OPTIONS PROPFIND> Order deny, allow Deny from all </LimitExcept> </Directory> <Directory /home/*/public_html/cgi-bin> AllowOverride FileInfo AuthConfig Limit # Options MultiViews Indexes SymLinksIfOwnerMatch IncludesNoExec Options MultiViews Indexes SymLinksIfOwnerMatch SetHandler cgi-script Options +ExecCGI # <Limit GET POST OPTIONS PROPFIND> # Order allow, deny # Allow from all # </Limit> # <LimitExcept GET POST OPTIONS PROPFIND> # Order deny, allow # Deny from all # </LimitExcept> </Directory>
