Has anybody succeeded in getting SUSE5.2 to work with their Thinpad?
Yes, some people have reported success. But many have reported the problem you have. The problem still is not solved. There are people that are able to install using a Debian kernel, some can use a RedHat kernel and others are able to use the S.u.S.E. kernel. I think all distributions make use of the so-called "Tecra"-Patch which solves the problem on some machines. The problem is in the A20 handling and cache coherency of these notebooks. It seems to be dependend on the size of the kernel, timing and many other things. There is currently no bootdisk that can reliably boot on every machine. One thing we could observe is the fact that all affected machines are able to boot using loadlin. Loadlin does the loading in another way (besides other things loadlin loads the kernel first and the initdisk.gz as second, so chances are really good the caches have been flushed). Of course we are not allowed to distribute a disk containing MS code. For this reason I created a new bootdisk that contains a FreeDos kernel that is capable of running loadlin.exe. I've just put a so-prepared bootdisk at ftp.suse.com:/pub/suse_update/suse52/disks/thinkpad. Please give the mirror some hours until it will be there. Then, please download this image and write it to a floppy (either under DOS using rawrite.exe or using "dd" under Linux) and try if the notebook boots from that disk. Please note that the booting is very slow, but I have feedback that it works on a thinkpad that would not boot with any other floppy (neither S.u.S.E. nor Debian nor RedHat). Please give it a try and report feedback directly to me.
Forget about XF86, or /dev/hda*. I am talking about bare minimum booting off the installation floppies.
I am having the problem that the machine simply WILL NOT BOOT with SUSE5.2. I have not had any problems installing SUSE5.2 in any desktop machines. The laptop has built in floppy drive, and a CDROM connected via PCMCIA card (which for the sake of this email, assume that it is not plugged in). Here is the problem:
1. I create floppies using rawrite.exe or dd using the images eide01, eide02, or eide03 (I tried them all!) and the supplemental disk. 2. I insert the boot floppy into the floppy drive. 3. I turn on the machine. 4. I get the splash screen: "Welcome to SUSE" 5. I get the boot: prompt. 6. After a few seconds, the machine begins the booting process, hanging entirely two lines after the "boot:" prompt.
This same floppy works wonders on my other desktops, but simply will not work on the laptop!!! I have had the same problem using Debian 1.3.1 on this machine. RedHat 4.2 boots and installs beautifully.
Interesting combination. Most (but not all) machines are able to boot from the Debian disk...
I would ideally like to have SUSE5.2 running on this machine, so any help that anybody can give would be GREATLY appreciated.
Happy Linux'ing!
