If anyone could explain why sound is completely broken in 5.3 I could use some help. I have been compiling sound as a module since 2.0.29 and I have always had a perfectly functioning system. 5.3 won't load the module unless I manually insmod it, and then midi is still completely broken. I downloaded fresh 2.0.35 source to see if it was the 5.3 sources, but it's something else in the os because it displayed the same behaviour. This is _really_pissing_me_off_. I have compiled dozens and dozens of kernels since I started using S.u.S.E. with S.u.S.E. 5.1 and I am not doing anything differently and I am 4 kernels into 5.3 and none of them have had properly working sound.
Since there are so many different sound cards, we cannot provide a sound module that is working for all of them. In addition to that, more and more people are using OSS. Therefore we have made the decision, to comment out the sound module line in /etc/conf.modules. This is why you still can manually load it, but kerneld won't. We had a lot of support requests from people, who crashed their machines because kerneld attempted to load the sound module on machines which where not properly configured. All you have to do is to reactivate this line in /etc/conf.modules. Look for the string "alias char-major-14" and make sure, there's no "#" in front of it and the second column reads "sound", not "off".
Lenz, I installed 5.3, I've compiled a kernel that has sound turned off (as with 5.2), but the OSS driver will not load...the error is: Loading sndshield module failed. Trying to recompile it. Attempting to load sndshield again. Loading sndshield still fails. Any help, since 5.3 broke OSS?
