Further on this, the problem occurred a few hours after installing NoMachine. It appears to have written to both /etc/group & /etc/passwd files. It changed a line in /etc/passwd from nx:x:480:1000::/var/NX/nx:/bin/false to nx:x:480:1000::/var/NX/nx:/etc/NX/nxserver and added nx:x:1000: to /etc/group.
Uninstalling NoMachine and restoring old passwd & group files didn't fix the problem. Another thing that pops up with this is I cannot go into System Tray > Software Updater and check for new updates.
