That is the "greeter". The official name is "display manager". The place where you login to X.
There should be a point to click where you wold get a list of desktop choices, sometimes after entering the user name. Hi again Carlos, no I am not seeing anything that allows me to select from a list of desktops... :-(
It should be there, but sometimes it is difficult to identify.

Use "su -" instead of just "su".
Actually, I have been doing an "su root" and then type in root's password. Makes it easier for me since I tend to want to stay in root's context for awhile when doing administrative stuff. When I get ready to go back to being me, I just type "exit"
Then use "su - root". The dash is important. The "root" part is optional: if a user name is not entered, the default is "root". -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.2 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)
