Hello, Richie. Your fps mileage depends on a great many variables. I ran gears with the regular nv driver before installing the nvidia driver, and was very disappointed to find it only hit 79fps. With the addition of the nv driver, this figure leaped to 1724fps. Not bad for just updating a driver. This machine has a PII-333, 128MB RAM, Asus GF2MX board (running at 1x AGP because of the mobo chipset). I ran gears at 16bpp in a KDE session, and my kernel is still the original 2.4.0 that came out of the box with SuSE 7.1. You didn't mention what other hardware you have that might affect your fps score. For example, a newer mobo that allows the card to run at 2x AGP should get a higher fps score. A newer cpu running with a 100/133MHz FSB should also score better. From what I have read on this list, KDE is thought to be a fairly resource hungry desktop, so switching to a smaller window manager may also improve performance. For me, running gears on my system is a way to compare driver versions to one another; there are too many variables to use it as a benchmark for comparing different machines. Bye for now, Stuart. -----Original Message----- From: suse-linux-e-return-74215-stuart=yorkshirepudding.com@suse.com [mailto:suse-linux-e-return-74215-stuart=yorkshirepudding.com@suse.com]O n Behalf Of Richard Booth Sent: 02 October 2001 08:54 To: 'suse' Subject: [SLE] 3d: expected gears output Hi I have just installed an Abit nvidia geforce 2 MX card in a SuSE 7.2 box. Running gears gives output of around 890 FPS, but when my mouse focuses on the xterm running gears the output shifts up to 1500 FPS. Is the normal for gears? Is the 1500 FPS the correct output? See below. Thanks Rich
gears output
4431 frames in 5.000 seconds = 886.200 FPS 7543 frames in 5.000 seconds = 1508.600 FPS
