I decided to test it out before I went (I'm now in the default FVWM2 setup - funky)
OK, I have a solution, and this applies to anyone who has experienced the same thing under KDE I reckon...
Set the following GConf key to off in gconf-editor:
/desktop/gnome/background/draw_background
And that should sort it - it certainly did for me.
