Odd that you mention those, because for all the hype about their vulnerabilities I've never seen any evidence getting hacked by Acroread or Java or flash. Although a windows machine did get a virus from a PDF once. The only time I've been hacked was when I was running and old Red Hat, which (at that time) installed with a boat load of open ports.
