Hi,
The current version of cups for SuSE does not allow me to select printing to a printer hooked up to a Win98 machine. How do I fix this? Should I get the rpms from the CUPS site and completely remove the rpms that SuSE provides?

I had a lot of problems getting my SuSE boxes to print properly to Windows print servers using either CUPS, LPRold or LPRng. The solution I received from someone else on this list (whom I would credit if I hadn't accidently deleted the email) was dependent on using the right samba rpms. Just as an aside - you do have samba installed? I found that using either the samba-2.0.7-72.rpm or samba-2.0.9.rpm would allow me to print to a windows print server using LPRold, LPRng or CUPS. However, the samba-2.0.7-107.rpm that comes with SuSE 7.1 or the samba-2.0.8.rpm from the SuSE 7.1 update ftp site would not print properly at all. I would try to print a test page and would get several pages with a small block of the test page on each sheet. My suggestion would be to use YAST1 to install the samba-2.0.9.rpm from the SuSE 7.0 update site, then use YAST2 to install the Windows based printers. That works very well for me to a variety of postscript and non-postscript printers on the windows network here at work. Hope this helps, Mark
