Hi,
Did you ever get a response? I have the same problem, and although I edited the manpath config file as described below, it's using $MANPATH, which I can't find, and which still has the empty file listed.

"John Lamb" <J.D.Lamb@btinternet.com> I've been getting
gdbm fatal: read error
when trying to use man pages recently. Does anyone know what this might mean?
A fix is to remove /usr/local/man from the MANPATH. There is actually nothing in /usr/local/man except the standard man* folder. All the permissions in /usr/local/man are the same as those in /usr/share/man.
Read /usr/share/doc/packages/gdbm/README. May give you a place for further research. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org
