Dear List,
I wanted to ask the community about these issues I have had with suse 11.3 (32 bit, KDE 4.4.4) before starting to file bug reports.
- When installing using a DVD iso (some one month ago) downloaded from opensuse.org, the MD5 hash sums did not match. .. I had to install using the network installation instead.
- openoffice hangs when trying to export excel tables.
- multimedia is, as usual, pretty hosed. When opening a folder which has . mov (quicktime) movies, dolphin crashes. This is because it tries to create a preview and as always, xine backend does not work at all with quicktime files.
- .. I tried to fix the following problem (worked with earlier suse versions) by installing the vlc phonon backend. But on the other hand, when I go to the kde configuration module and click "multimedia" I get a kde crash announcement. No way to enter the "multimedia" module.
- I am getting all the time kde crash announcements concerning knotify.
- Amarok does not start but it crashes (probably because of that multimedia thing).
Any ideas how to fix these issues?
Try installing 11.4 fresh, with some caveats which may or may not apply (YMMV). Many of these problems have been fixed. I think the Dolphin preview crash bug was fixed somewhere around KDE 4.5.5 I think. Several things have changed wrt to multimedia, and which don't work properly for me so I undo them. 11.4 will default to Pulseaudio being "On" - I turn that off as I've had nothing but problems with PA. While I can't speak to the quicktime issue, I also utilize the phonon-xine backend instead of the (now) default gstreamer. It may not always work in the future, but it has always worked for me and I don't really want to lose the equalizer (equalizer doesn't work in gstreamer). I am on a 64 bit install, but I think there is a problem with nvidia drivers on 32 bit machines (may have recently been addressed - don't know). So if your processor is 64 bit happy you might want to consider making the move. I'm currently running 11.4 and just upgraded KDE from K:D:F this morning to 4.6.1 (with KDEPIM still at 4.4.10) and so far so good. I think many of the problems you may be experiencing have been addressed since the 11.3 and KDE 4.4.4 days. -Mike -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
