conversion from a format that my in-car cd player can play (mp3) to a format that it can not play (ogg) is the biggest no-no anyways, not considering loss of quality at all.

I could say something about the car MP3 player but wont most decent players can play ogg files . and as for lossey formats well simple answer re-encode the file from the ground up if you got a decent machine it dont take many seconds to encode the average sound file ..
