I opened a PDF in Okular 0.12 (a single page text document), and selected the text. As soon as I did this, KDE4.6.0 started doing odd things. Apps stopped responding to mouse clicks, the KDE4 desktop stopped responding (eg clicking the KMenu or any app in the taskbar did nothing). I could switch apps using Alt+Tab, but the apps did not respond to mouse clicks. I switched over to tty1 and logged in as root. Attempts to kill Okular (using kill -9) didn't help. Okular wouldn't die.... same with trying to kill any other open app from CLI... they never changed state, and never exited. I then killed X by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace twice. This seemed to work, but KDM did not relaunch and put me in the login screen. At tty1 I attempted to do an init3, and this failed with a KDM not responding error. Last resort, I typed reboot and hit enter. The system message "The system is going down for reboot NOW" was shown... but the reboot never happened. I ended up having to do a hard reset to get back up and running. So... I probably could have troubleshot this a lot better, but... these are the basic steps I did up to the hard reset. Checking the /var/log/messages file, there is nothing there that gives me any clue what happened.... ------------------ Feb 4 09:59:30 linux-dmo6 rsyslogd: -- MARK -- Feb 4 10:05:01 linux-dmo6 acpid: 1 client rule loaded Feb 4 10:05:01 linux-dmo6 acpid: 1 client rule loaded Feb 4 10:06:28 linux-dmo6 acpid: 1 client rule loaded Feb 4 10:06:28 linux-dmo6 acpid: 1 client rule loaded Feb 4 10:07:07 linux-dmo6 acpid: 1 client rule loaded Feb 4 10:07:07 linux-dmo6 acpid: 1 client rule loaded Feb 4 10:07:58 linux-dmo6 acpid: 1 client rule loaded Feb 4 10:07:58 linux-dmo6 acpid: 1 client rule loaded Feb 4 10:09:44 linux-dmo6 acpid: 1 client rule loaded Feb 4 10:09:45 linux-dmo6 acpid: 1 client rule loaded Feb 4 10:09:55 linux-dmo6 kdm[1430]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly Feb 4 10:10:05 linux-dmo6 init: Switching to runlevel: 3 Feb 4 10:10:34 linux-dmo6 shutdown[5454]: shutting down for system reboot Feb 4 10:14:05 linux-dmo6 kernel: imklog 5.4.0, log source = /proc/kmsg started. ------------------ Anyone encounter something like this before?
