Just sent an e-mail that out that may help you.
Also, check to see what purpleshirt said, its very relevant. You can get modutils from www.kernel.org Its under a util directory (I have to get up for work at 6am and its 1:15am here, its gonna hurt!)

Hi, well I just upgraded from 2.2.17 to 2.4.0. I'm experimenting a "strange" thing (at least strange to my idiocy...).
Yesterday I tried using xfce, just to play a bit with this wm, switching from wmaker. I was convinced not to be able to get sound (even if I seemed to include all the modules in the kernel).
As my sound never worked since I started changing the original installation kernel, I was acquainted to that.
But... surprise! xfce started emitting sounds related to windows iconing and placing, etc..! More: cdp is working!
On the contrary alsa apps don't seem willing to work. My SB AWE 64 is a bit crazy, I read a lot of HOW-TO, but it seemed not to work under Linux.
Now, my question is simply how's that working under xfce and not working under wmaker? (sound modules loaded???).
Any idea?
Thanks in advance,
Ciao,
Stefano

Its not for newbie for sure....I tried to keep the kernel itself small by using modules, but my Ethernet card did not work. The module ends up in
place /lib/modules/2.4.1/kernel/drivers/net/tulip.
The same happened with sound (emu10k1). The only way I got around this was by building it into the kernel, however it looks as though joystick support has gone out of the window, at least for now...Ethernet card worked only when built in too.
The easiest part was actually the Nvidia graphics card, all I had to do was re-make the driver from source.
Overall its probably best to wait for SuSE 7.1, unless you want to spend
