These bug reports claim that installing Microsoft true type fonts from YAST online updater does not work if the cabextarct package is missing. I have cabextract (cabextract-1.2-57) installed but installing the font from the updater still does not work. Running the script from console works. I checked it.
So the problem is not the missing cabextract.
Same holds true for my system. I had cabextract installed, nonetheless yast online update failed to install the msttffonts.
I will file a bug report.

=========== Why not just install the "liberation-fonts" instead, rather than worry with those? I thought these were built to replace all the msttffonts, so it would be another reason for users to quit depending on MS stuff?
