I am running 8.1 on an AMD Athlon, VIA KT400 chipset. I have noticed that when I use YOU to upgrade to the latest kernel for amd processors, one of my NICs stops working, and the nvidia 3D driver crashes the computer.
It is normal that after changing the kernel in any way, nvidia driver stops working and need the kernel module recompiled. However... you are using suse 8.1. If I remember correctly, there was a kernel patch for it that broke nvidia driver somehow: in my system it was terribly slow, several seconds per redraw. I couldn't make it work again till I upgraded to 8.2
Using rpm to downgrade back to the kernel on the CD, everything works fine again.
I have purchased 8.2, and the kernel on that system causes exactly the same problems.
Which one? nvidia 3d, nic, or dma? They are different :-) -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
