I went to ftp.kde.org and downloaded the KDE 1.1pre1 set or RPMs for Redhat 5.x since there were none in the SuSE directory! When I installed the base package, it screwed my K instalation to the point it wouldn't go pass the log on point. removing that and instaling an older package meant for SuSe helped the problem.
