Try another Windows Manager and avoid KDE because it has a program which will cause misery with a sound system.
Try something like "init 3" <enter> then "startx fvwm2" <enter>
Also in KDE you might try a mixer say like "gamix"
Skype and mic problem is SOLVED! You helped me sugesting to try another audio mixer. I've never thought that could be a problem with mixer. But KMix have a bug when working with any mic. Other features works ok. I think that KMix was main problem, but here what I've done to make Skype to work. First, I've upgraded ALSA from 1.0.6 to 1.0.8. I've found ALSA for SUSE at Packman. In KDE Control Center at sound system, hardware tab, for audio device, selected ALSA, not Autodetect. Then uninstaled KMix, and instaled KAMix (works better then gamix), and that's it. I've run "alsaconf" after upgrade of ALSA, and configuration of sound card with YaST, but I'm sure, problem was with audio mixer, not with ALSA or OSS emulation or arts. Now, Skype works OK and people hear me as it should. I have analog headphones, but good idea is to buy USB ones. It works with SUSE as I've learned. And now, it's time for nex issue... -- Mirko
