NAT is a royal PITA. We accept it because there is, there wasn't, no alternative. For example, with IPv6 you can send email directly from your machine to somebody else direct, without any intermediate mail server collecting it. Or phone them. Or share files with them. You could send an email where the photos are direct links to your machine at home. If you wish.
