Check who uses HD

I am trying to setup a laptop to use as less as possible the HD to be able to slow down it when not used (power safe). I already have been hacking with flushd configuration and apmd.conf but HD only slows down a few times and just a few seconds... How can I check what process are using HD??? Cheers
