Gerry, do you need to access http pages via your ISP's proxy server? In that case you'll need to set some environment variables via yast/rc.config/ /etc/profile. Something like HTTP_PROXY ... There are dummy entries in /etc/profile, but these get overwritten by SuSEconfig with entries from rc.config.

Juergen, thank you for your reply. You gave me the hint I needed. I hadn't even thought of yast. I went in to rc.config and there it was...an incorrect entry in the HTTP_PROXY setting. I used to use a proxy server to get to the internet but recently changed to ip forwarding. Looks like this setting was missed but nothing had complained so I didn't notice it!
