on a laptop screen, divx are enough (IMHO) and only 700Mb in size for a film... but better dl them because the creation is very long
Depending on hardware and length of the film, it can be done in 40 minutes or less. Mplayer usually takes less than 10 minutes to rip the film from the DVD and dump it in an MPEG, and then it may take another 20 to 30 minutes for ffmpeg to actually transcode the MPEG to an xvid AVI. I automated the ripping and transcoding process, putting them in separate scripts. A copy of the scripts are available through here: <URL:http://www.davjam.org/~davjam/video/index.htm> The ripping script I wrote runs as root, which isn't the best of ideas, but it does save be from having to keep entering the root password to mount and umount the DVDs.
