and Additional HD made a new machine out of my old one. I expect the 2.2.x kernel to give me 2 to 5 times more speed than I have now with the 2.0.36 kernel.
Really? The improvements in 2.2.x are that great? How so, and in what respects? You seem to be saying that you expect this improvement in addition to whatever speed-up you've obtained from the h/w upgrades.
I have noticed that performance "seems" to have a quicker response time with the new kernel. For instance when I do an operation in Midnight Commander, the scrolling speed thru files is noticably faster, things apperar to "pop to the screen" quicker. The same is true with starting X, windows seem to "pop open" quicker, and X itself starts up faster. I know this is totally subjective, but it is noticable. -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
