Well, I agree on most points...
Another issue is that most company administratives (who most of the time =
don't know that much about OS's) say "now we replace UNIX with NT !" - =
"why ?" - "because it's MS and everybody has to have MS, and it's better =
and this and that..."
They don't know why, they just believe what Bill's telling'em...
Instead of having capable UNIX administrators, and I mean _qualified_ =
people, they put NT (and one of the very few advantages of NT is that is =
_is_ easy to install and to administrate, because of the simple fact =
that you are NOT allowed to modify a lot of parameters - compared to =
UNIX & Linux, where you really can change ANYTHING, and customize your =
system to your needs, as YOU wish, and not as MS wishes) on their =
servers, they put NT on their workstations... and it crashes, it's =
slower, it's more expensive in hardware and software (than Linux, that's =
obvious - "but NT licenses are cheaper than Digital Unix !" you will =
say... well, not exactly... have you already tried to get support from =
MS ? it's very $$$$$$$$$$$... When you buy Digital Unix (for example... =
we're working with this here, in this ....errm, highschool (I think =
that's the right word... in Belgium it's "=E9cole sup=E9rieure" - like =
University, but not as long ;-) ), you also buy the support, and you =
don't have to pay extra... and also, you have a reliable product, which =
NT obviously isn't.
At this moment, I'm writing you this mail from a Windows NT Server (4.0) =
host I'm working on (I'm making my end-of-study work on Oracle =
Designer/2000)... and it CRASHES !! Sometimes 10x a day !!! Can you =
believe that !?
I'm sorry MS-lovers, but there is NO EXCUSE for that ! A hardware =
problem ? Probably... but with NT, you have NO CHANCE to find out what's =
wrong... Linux has logs & kernel panics, etc... and it never crashes =
without a good (let's say "bad") reason...
SaMBa is a very good product, although it is a little slower with the =
default options than a NT server...
There are rooms above the school, in the same building, and we have a =
70-host network (all students) with 2 NT 4.0 Servers and 2 Linux =
servers... (one is underway, in fact)
The working Linux Server is a i486DX2-66 with 32 megs of RAM and a =
"Bigfoot" disk (that's bad... very slow)... we have S.u.S.E. Linux 5.0 =
on it (I'll put 5.2 on it as soon as I have it) with kernel 2.0.33, =
Apache 1.3b5 (the beta version), SaMBa (I'm going to install the latest =
(1.9.18p4) on it tonight or tomorrow), DNS (named), DHCPd, ... ... and =
it works fine!
Samba really is a good peace of software, and it *is* easy to =
administrate (although many people have trouble with it), I think...
Pascal
it's Kriek time !!
pfeew... did I really write all this ? no more damn' "sorry for my =
english"-stuff... "my English is great !!!", isn't it ? ;-)
What's the difference between Windows 95 and a virus ?
A virus _works_...

I work in a DoD shop that does all of its networking with Lanman. =
Currently, if you want to play Lanman, you buy Microsoft. Microsoft's =
architecture is proprietary. Microsoft is doing everything they can to =
whipe out any and all competition, except for that token competition =
that can be used for defense in antitrust law suits. They don't share =
thier protocols.=20
=20
NT is restrictive in many ways. It *is easy to work with, and has =
some very impressive features. Nonetheless, I am finding that I like =
UNIX more than NT. One can simply do more with UNIX/Linux. One of the =
problems with UNIX is that it is harder to use than NT. This is =
changing. (That is material for another thread though.)=20
=20
NT is growing fast. I remember when a CNE was the thing to be. Now =
it is MCSE. I firmly believe that UNIX can do what NT can do, only =
better. If this can be accomplished, NT will be only one of many =
solutions. One will learn a conceptual framework rather than a product =
line. If I know Unix I can move between Linux, HP-UX, Solaris, etc.=20
=20
I also wanted to plug the book. I like it.=20
=20
My reasons for posting here were to find out who knows what, and to =
let people know about someting I find interesting. I figure, if I am =
going to be using suse, I should try to strengthen the user base by =
sharing what little bit I find valuable. Samba may prove to be a total =
wash. Something tells me this is not the case.=20

Subject: [S.u.S.E. Linux] Samba anyone?I am currently =
reading up on Samba. If you don't know, Samba is a way to make your =
WinDos-NT system think your Linux/UNIX box is one of them. I have not =
seen any evidence yet of Samba being able to fully implement the NT SAM. =
I have seen a glimmer of hope that the Samba Team may try to implement =
an alternative, and perhaps NT compatible, solution using LDAP. Since I =
am slowly becoming something of an expert in LDAP, this would really =
make me happy. I also think it would make for a much more powerful and =
versatile service than WINS/Browsing/SAM.=20
I have a friend who works in a biological research lab with =
a limited budget who needs to support Lanman browsing across subnets. =
Samba could be used with Linux to effect this at a very low cost.=20
=20
I guess if I wish to say much more about Samba, I should say =
that on the Samba mailing list. I'll just leave y'all with a plug for =
John D. Blair's new book *Samba, Integrating Unix and Windows*. It is =
well written and informative.=20
