I feel nostalgic, because I belonged to a anti Wintel school for a long time. I was an OS/2 user with AMD CPU. Anyway. As you might know, mplayer's vdpau device is derived from ffmpeg. It's same for kodi 18.x. So, your problem is peculiar to vlc, I think. BTW. It's midnight here in Japan, now. I'll investigate the vlc source code, tomorrow.
