You can check which backend is being used by KDE by default using "System Settings -> Multimedia -> Audio & Video -> Backend. If you can, try selecting the VLC backend and test. (If it is not installed, you might try installing the VLC backend as a test. You can have both installed and set the preference through the above screen).
Not suggesting that will fix it necessarily, but it seems like a key point of difference. YMMV.
BTW, I just realised that the method suggested by Carlos above takes you to exactly the same setup screen, so either way is valid.
